Cutless bearing

Rodd I Replaced my cutless bearing on my 77 Catalina a few years ago and what you have to do is this. Get a Hacksaw and cut Thru the old bearing, cut carefully you do not want to cut into the strut. The bearing wall is a little less than 1/16 of a inch thick. You will see a seam inbetween the bearing wall and the strut gently tap a small screwdriver into this seam and the old bearing will curl into itself and you can just slide it out. Putting the new one in is another project. I destroyed the first on I tried to put in the wall thickness of these things are very thin and if you pound on them to hard when putting a new one in it will just crush. I had a piece of bar stock turned on a lathe that the new cutless bearing slid onto with a sholder that the new bearing seated on. I heated up the strut with a tourch (to make the bore size a little bigger) and quickly pushed and hammered the new bearing into place. Contact me at this web site if you need any more information. Go to this website and you'll find an easy way to get it out. I did the same way but with a hydraulic press. You don't need to cut the bearing if you use the method shown. Just make sure you get washers about 1/32 smaller than the 1 1/4" dia. cutless bearing. Any smaller and they'll just take out the rubber. Any bigger and you damage the strut.
