Catalina 22 Bottom of the ocean
Hey guys,

I'm the new owner of a 1979 C-22. I have a few (haha) questions about the rigging. I've taken photos so that you can see what I'm talking about.

In the below image, does this look like the correct rigging for the mainsheet? It seems to work well when I swing the boom out, etc. And I like that it could be adjusted from either end.

-

In the below image, I'm showing the jib lines. Does it seem to be routed correctly? Also, the thin line is the jib downhaul. Where would you cleat it?
Would you rather these two lines be placed by the jib halyard and all be controlled there?

-

In the below two images, I'm looking at the clew of the main sail. The line runs through a pulley at the end of the boom and then runs along the boom to a weird kind of non-moving cam (I don't know the name of this thing.) It looks like this is a line I can pull to "stretch the foot" of the sail.

-

In the below two images, I'm looking at a pulley that hangs off the aft part of the mast. I'm guessing this pulley has a line that runs to the pulley on the boom (in the second picture.) If this is somewhat correct, I can't seem to figure out how to tie the line off. It's just some pulleys.

In the below two images, I'm looking at a line that is hanging off the leach of the main sail. It's a long line, and I don't know what to do with it. I guess it is for reefing. I'm also showing a picture of the boom where a pulley sits that I pulled the line through. Where would it go after that?

-

Lastly, in the below image, I'm looking at a line hanging off the main sail. Again, I have no idea where this would run to.

Thank you kindly for any input!

Ok , lets see if I can help.

Your first picture is of a doudle ended mainsheet , allowing you to trim the main from either the boom ( up front ) or the traveller (at the stern.) This actually an option that you can purchase from Catalina Direct.

Your second picture of your jib lines appears to be correct although there is some discussion that since your boat has 'outside' jib tracks, that some people choose to run the lines outside the lifelines so that the jib sheet doesnt rub against them.

In your third and fourth pictures, it appears that your mainsheet outhaul (to tighten the foot of the main, is rigged through the block at the end of the boom (correct) but then is run forward to the mast at the cleat that looks to be your reefing cleat? You may want to look on the other side of your boom (not shown) for another spot to cleat off the outhaul.

In your fifth picture, if you have one of these pulley arrangements hanging down on both sides of the main, they are probably 'lazy jacks'. If you have only the one pulley, I would have to assume that that is your 'topping lift' , to run through a block at the back of the boom and then secures to a cleat to stop the boom from dropping to the deck when you drop the mainsail.

sixth picture ...????

Your seventh picture is a shot of your mainsail aft reefing line that should run through the cheek block as you have shown and the to the cleat on the boom near the mast where you have your outhaul cleated now. It also should not be fastened to the grommet hole in the sail, it should pass through the grommet freely and be secured to an eye strap on the other side of the boom (not shown), at a point even with the reefing cheek block already on the starboard side of boom. You probably have a two line reefing system, one line at the back of the main and one line at the mast for the front of the main where you have another grommet at an equal level with the rear grommet. By having the rear reefing line running up to the cleat near the mast, you can reef the main at the mast by having access to both lines, front and aft at the same time.

And your last picture is a mainsail downhaul to help you get the main down when it doesnt want to come down freely.

Hard to tell on some of the pics, I sure others will comment
