cat 22 - finding and instaling a Jib Furler

ok, well, as I predicted, I have come up with several new questions, that I am sure someone here is qualified to answer, as i have gotten so many great responses already. So, I was wondering about a Jib Furler. where can I get one, how difficult is it to install, and what is the cost involved?oh! also, where would I get a mainsail "cover" (and what is the terminology for that?) and, just as a random question, did the original cat 22 sails come with reefing points? as my sails (which I know are newer, last 5 years, with no use!) does not have them.okay, thats it for today, (I think!)Heather

my shot at your questions

First a Furler for the Jib is actually very common and not real difficult to set up . You will have a investment though. The furler will run about 275.00 to 350.00 but then you need to have your hanked on jib recut for the furler or have a new sail made. As you are in the "city" (as apposed to being in Alaska where we only dream about access to things)and have access to a true sail rigger you could have one shop set up your furler and take care of the jib for not to much extra.  Now main sail cover is easy. It is a main sail "cover" and you can buy them on this website or you can order them at west marine or any of the other sailing cataloges. You will need to measure the boom with the main sail on. My first main cover did not have room for the slugs to stay in the track when you flaked so I jumped on ebay and got a great used one with pleanty of room cheap. ( if you do not have the mast track gates sold by catlaina direct it is very worth the money.)As for the reffing points the they are options that you add when you have the sail created. but most sail lofts can put them in for you. You should be a ble to get a great buy with the furler, new jib and the reef points if you go to the same sail loft.

Cat 22 furlers and reef points

A furler for a Catalina 22 will probably start around $400 for either a CDI or a Schaefer Snap furl. A furling jib will need to be added.The Sail Warehouse has some good packages that have a new forestay with a toggle, a CDI furler, and a furling jib. I think a 135% is fine.Catalina Direct sells furlers for Catalina 22's as well. They have three models, a CDI, a Schaefer Snap Furl, and a Harken that is very expensive.I have a CDI furler myself with an Ullman 135 that I got through Catalina Direct. Unfortunately, the I had to modify the CDI furler for effective use. I have one myself.The original Catalina supplied mainsail for a Catalina 22 included one reef point. This is true on both the older, shorter batten mains and the newer mains with longer battens. I’ve had both these sails, though now I have a full batten Ullman with one reef point.
