Periodically I've sanded down the cast iron keel on my O'day 37 and applied epoxy. It seems corrosion starts where it is faired to the hull. I think perhaps I need to have the boatyard drop the keel, make sure the stainless steel keel bolts are in good condition, sandblast / recoat the keel then bed it back to the hull. Has this worked for anyone out there? Is this overkill? thanks.

Iron oxide

I am interested in the experts opinion on this. However, as I understand it iron froms it's own iron oxide film and that film will prevent further oxidation for a very long time (example iron sewer pipes in Rome from the time of the Roman empire). I would suspect you are creating an oxidation issue by "cleaning" the iron down to the point when it is "shiny". Experts?
