Has anyone had success with Rustolem rusty metal primer under Interprotect 2000E on a cast iron keel? I ground it down to bare metal and sprayed it with primer since it is going to rain all week here. Wondering if I have to remove all the primer before applying interprotect.

Probably a good question for the Rustoleum tech folks.. I would guess that the use instructions might have some info on that as well where they talk about max time you can wait to topcoat.. My guess is if it looks fine and is really dry, and not showing any rust blooms the interprotect can go on.

I used another primer/rust converter and put IP 2000 over it summer before last. seems fine this year.

I have used another rust inhibitor and rustolem prime and VC 17 and it has work well in eliminating the annual "bleed" on my 34. Really stops any further oxidation. Note used in simple touch up of small spots.

After a few years I thought I would just do a follow up on this. The Rustolem rusty metal primer has held up wonderfully under the 2000E. I am in freshwater so I can't speak to saltwater use.

Mine only has a couple of spots of rust and I have some time before she is splashed so I am reading with interest. The boat is 90 minutes away and the product the chandlery pitched would need several coats of the primer with a specific drying window in between. This is a problem for me as it is tough to get there to put on all these coats. Will the Rustoleum be good if I just wirebush the affected spots and then apply one coat of the product then VC17 over that?

Do you prep in sessions that end with a treatment of Ospho on the bare iron, a chemical rust converter. Then when you are ready to do your epoxy primer build (to 10 mil) camp out for a long weekend and apply 4-5 coats, last one hot coated with your bottom paint.
