While diving under my B361 to scrub the bottom, I found some "rust bumps" developing on the bottom of cast iron keel. This part of the keel doesn't get bottom paint because the boat is resting on it in the boatyard. What kind of sealer should I use to coat this area (when I pull the boat for it's next bottom job)?

Make them paint it

The keel can be blocked on 12 x 12's . Coat the exposed area, let dry then lift the boat an inch by raising the stands, move the blocks and coat the unpainted spots. (make sure the area is ground clean first to remove any rust)If the yard doesn't want to do this find another yard, they are just being lazy.

Paint it in the slings

Another process which the yards I use utilize is to save that area for when the boat is back in the slings and ready for relaunch. They then have free access to the underside of the keel. I agree with Kaptin, the yard is being lazy. Don't accept it any more than they would accept taking less money for the job.

Not the sling thing!

The only problem with doing the patch work with the boat in the sling is that the bottom coating doesnt get a chance to dry and set before the boat is dropped. Also, I hate working on a boat when it's in a sling. I get very nervous! Whether you do it yourself or have the yard do it It's a very common thing that shouldn't have caused any problems and should of been done.

Don't disagree

I don't disagree. I left mine go with apx 80% of it done because I didn't trust the guy running the lift. There was no way I was going to crawl under there with him at the controls. The next time around I used a different marina with a much better reputation. I let them do the work and felt confident they did it properly. I would have felt comfortable doing it myself based on my experience with them. As you mentioned in a previous thread you have to choose the right people to work with.
