Just bought a Hunter 26 the previous owner pulled it in and out but not over the road, with a Jeep Grand Cherokee, but it looks small compared to the size of the boat. I need to buy something to trailer over the 200-300 mile range. Any Suggestions Out there?? It does have a Hunter Tandem trailer.

Quick answer.

There is lots on this in the archives over just the last six months. I know, 'cause I posted the question twice.Here's a quick synopsis:Best towing vehicle is a pickup or Chevy Suburban. Expedition also does well. There are a few out there who have towed hundreds of miles with just a Chevy Blazer (GMC Jimmy), which is what I own, though a number advise against it. Make sure you get a transmission cooler. Don't tow in overdrive. Check your vehicles rated tow capacity.Good luck. Durango works too

I've been towing my 26 with a Dodge Durango with no problems. As Ron mentioned, no overdrive while towing, trans cooler recommended. I like the third seat, but smaller size than Expedition. Bought the boat in NJ and towed it back to Chicago. Have since had it to Ohio (Lake Erie - Port Clinton) and Michigan (Lake Michigan - South Haven).

I have been towing trailers for years, from a small tent camper with a VW to an old heavy 27ft camper. I bought a GMC 1/2 ton pickup with a 5.0 liter engine. I added a transmission oil cooler. Check the rear end gearing, get a 3.74 to 4.11(for heavy loads). An automatic transmission is good. I will tow in overdrive (against the manufacturer's advice) if I am on flat terrain and the transmission is not constantly shifting. My 27ft camper weighs4200lb empty(no overdrive) My H-23 with trailer and gear weigh about 3500lb(I use overdrive). Hope this helps.
