What do you think a suicide bomber fears......

that would deter him/her? Mortyd, I'm not sure what the bad guys do or don't know, only that they intend us harm and we can't be too careful or security-conscious..... although confiscating my toothpaste and unopened bottle of Diet Pepsi last time I flew is right at the edge. :) I'll go with Paul Akers' explanation in post #12 - the policy makes sense, puts safety ahead of convenience, saves a good bit of government money (read 'ours'), and keeps flight crews from having to carry a thick book and determine whether that gizmo is a 'SPC-40 model C' or 'model D' and having to argue with passengers. Phil, I believe your friend is right, with the slight correction that 'any ferrous metal' will affect a magnetic compass. Aluminum won't, stainless-steel won't, copper won't, brass?, bronze? After all, the compass reads the Earth's magnetic field, so ANY magnetic field will affect it. Cheers, Bob s/v X SAIL R 8

Don't put GPS in checked Baggage!

If you put your GPS in Checked Baggage, and it gets damaged or stolen, the airline will not be responsible, it happened to a friend of mine on Useless Air, read the fine print on checked baggage.
