To preserve our wood floor, mainly from our dogs, we purchased some "rubber backed" bathroom carpet. I made a template of the floor plan and just traced it onto the carpet. Wife is really happy with it and we all know a happy wife = more days on the boat. If you decide to go this route I ended up trimming the carpet @ half an inch smaller all around which allowed for expansion and a much better fit, also flip the template etc
We just bought a cheap runner at WalMart that fits perfectly from the edge of the galley counter down the aisle to the raised part at the head of our H34. It was down all last season and never slipped or bunched up, yet added some warmth and decoration.
Because we had a dog at the time, when we purchased Dreamboat in 2002 we purchased custom carpet runners from a place like this one (don't remember which now) http://www.snapincarpet.com We did not add snaps. The rubberized backing holds it just fine. We had runners made that left about two inches of floor showing around the edges. 12 seasons later they look good and our floors look like brand new.
