I have a 376 that i live aboard and am thinking about carpeting the sole. Any ideas. Im looking for a little more comfort, and to protect the wood. Please help with any ideas on whether this is crazy or ways in which i would do it. thanks, Miles Pincus Las Brisas Hunter 376

Not toooo Krazy but....

Miles: We did this on our '85 H'31. We used burber(sp?) carpet. I measured the widest and longest dimensions and got a piece of carpet that would fit. My area was small enough that I just layed the carpet in and marked it and cut to fit. You may also want to get some paper and make a pattern. When we were satisfied with the fit I took it to a carpet shop and had the edges bound. This cost about $1-1.50/ft (more than the carpet). It looks very professional and keeps the boat clean. We have a dog on board and she has problems with the varnished floors (too slippery). I have carpet under the steps in the companionway and under the settee (ours is in seperate sections). Did not put anything in the galley area or in the head.

Carpeting

I installed carpeting in our Legend 37. You will want to install it in sections so you will be able to get to the bilge pump, knotmeter, etc. After cutting the carpet to fit, I used contact cement and glued non-skid shelf liner to the bottom of the sections. This keeps the carpet from sliding underfoot and also protects the sole. Hope this helps, Bob

Miles, Suggest you read Autohelm Diaper in Big Boats forum.

Don't install the carpet permanently

We use indoor/outdoor carpet with a rubber backing. It doesn't move around and gives us the option of removing the pieces when out for a while and shaking them over the lee side to remove sand, dirt etc.

Carpeting for the Sole

I did the same with my Catalina 25". I went to Home Depot and purchased thier Marine Carpeting. The first year I used double face tape to hold it in places. That was not effective. The next year I use a hot melt glue gun in the coroners and that worked great. I also cut the carpet and hot melt glued over the cover for the bildge. If I had to remove the capet all you have is a little clean up of the spots of hot melt glue which was no big deal.

Rubber-backed Berber..

We wanted a soft, quality appearance without gluing or taping to prevent slippage. We found a nice Berber with rubber backing. Fits the entire salon of an H37C with a cutout for the mast and a hole under the table for bilge access. Easily removed this fall and protects the sole from the dog and the grandkids.
