Carpet replacement?

This is an old topic that I would like to revisit. How many models and years of Cherubini's used carpet on the interior hull sides? When I received my new Sailrite catalog(Link below) I immediately wrote to ask for samples of their new "headliner" material. I wanted to see the colors and the difference between foam and no foam on the backing. The material looks good and I like the softness of the foam. But what about condensation in the v-berth and q-berth, will the foam act like a sponge? Or should I line the hull with some insulation first? Or should I forget vinyl and line it with something else, like wood or a better carpet? Bottom line, there has to be something better than that old carpet. :)

Carpet

Will likely replace the starboard quarter berth hull liner carpet in our 82 H36. Had to pull mine away from hull to let it dry due to leak around deck drain. Found that the carpet was sealed beneath the deck drain discharge hull fitting. Could not remove carpet without disassembling the deck drain hull fitting or cutting the carpet. This makes me believe the carpet was installed before the hull fitting was sealed. I would think Hunter would have sealed the hull fitting to the hull and then install the carpet around it. Am I missing something here? Is is similar on your boat? Anyway, the previous reply offers a solution that looks attractive. Mike s/v Charisma

More about carpet.

I think that drain on my H37C might be like yours Mike. I'll try to remember to look more closely when I next go see her. My carpet is not too bad, just a little tacky and it might clean up with some effort. In some of the cabinets it is falling away from the "wall". I just think it's time to spruce her up with something brighter that will clean up well. My concern is still that I will install something that will not insulate well and might not adhere to the f/g. The photo is of an '83(at Merritt Island, FL) and that does not look like carpet.

Same problem

We have the same situation on our H-36. The starboard deck drain has been leaking and has stained the carpet, not to mention the mildew involved. It is installed the same way, carpet first then thru hull etc. Plan to take a close look at it and perhaps replace the carpet with "something else" but not sure at this time. Ernie

Deck drain to carpet leak

Found out the hard way that the thru-hull from the deck drain is likely a Rule thru-hull for connecting to 3/4 in. hose. It is threaded into the hull with plastic nuts on the outside and inside of the hull. After successfully installing my new deck drain, thought I would go that extra step and rebed the thru-hull and replace the drain hose. Tucked away in the stbd qtr berth, I carefully unscrewed the thru-hull only to hear that unmistakable plot of something important falling into the lake. Failed to secure the outside nut before unscrewing thru-hull. Do it to myself again. Of course, the local marine supply carries the Rule thru-hull but only in 5/8 in. size. As for carpet replacement, I will likely reglue the old carpet for the time being until I make sure I have all the leaks sealed. Happy sailing Mike s/v Charisma 82 H36

Just Finished

I took another look at the leaking deck to hull hose on the qtr berth of our H-36 today and decided to replace the hose and thru hull fittings. The original fittings are too small and constantly end getting clogged. So I used a RULE 1 inch thru hull with hose barb on the hull and a Marleon 1 inch thru hull with barb on the deck. I found that the 1 inch vinyl hose (Shields series 148 multipurpose hose) fit easily on the Marleon hose barb but very tight on the RULE thru hull barb. Using boiling water to soften the hose at the end I was able to pre form the hose to fit the RULE thru hull and installation turned out to be quite simple. I also noticed that the carpet is glued on to an inner fibreglass liner and not the hull as I originaly thought. As best I can tell, the liner does not go all the way to the qtrberth floor, so removing the carpet is not going to be easy. A good cleaning is all that is needed! Ernie

Carpet question

A few years ago I hired a carpet cleaner person to come in and clean the hull carpets (I know, I know, a thousand lashes for using the credit card rather than my usual wrench, but carpet is not really my specialty!), and I was amazed that it came out looking almost new!!! However, whatever they used, loosened the glue in a few places. But, it looks so good, I wonder if anyone knows of a way to re-adhere that carpet....maybe something that can be injected through it? If I knew that I could glue it, FOR SURE, I might have it cleaned again. It was really amazing how well it cleaned up. By the way, quite a few years ago, I saw exactly the same carpeting, including foam, in an RV, so I suppose that RV stores might be a good resource. It had been a custom install, and the carpet wasn't very expensive, as it turns out.

It was prob'ly put down with contact cement, Tim

Give a local carpet company a call and see what they recommend after the fact. There prob'ly was never any glue in the spots that have bubbled since it was cleaned. Carpet cleaners usually start with a VERY powerful vacuum cleaner, to pull all the deep-down dirt out of the fibers. That, and then the moisture from the cleaner prob'ly stretched it a bit and caused a bubble like happens in wallpaper. It may even tighten up again on its own. ....Well, maybe not if it's been a couple of years since it was cleaned. I thought you'd just had it cleaned till I re-read your post.

I ripped mine out, put White Ashe

While you are considering, you might want to look at what I have done to my 33. 18 Years ago, I replaced my carpet with White Ashe planking. I am to this day, happy with the way it turned out and was even able to do additional areas and it all matched very well. Picture attached shows my interior (previously posted) but here it is again.

David, how did you attach it...

The white ashe looks great! I have been wanting to do something like this myself on my 37C. How did you attach it? Did you put firring strips on the hull and then screw the stips down or did you just directly adhere them to the hull sides? I would be very interested in knowing how it's held up over the years, what glues or asdhesives you used and any suggestions you have in retrospect about the installation. Any problems with mildew? Thanks! Tom Hadoulias S/V Lite Chop

Thanks Dave...

Sounds like a good way to do it and I think I might implement it as an option for my boat! Thanks again for the info! Tom Hadoulias S/V Lite Chop
