Just start pulling

Just start pulling the old carpet off. Wear a dust mask and goggles since this creates a lot of dust. Try and pull off in one piece and use as a template for the new carpet. Find the lightest weight you can at Home Depot etc.. Cut the new piece a little large so it can be trimmed later. There are several carpet adhesives you can get at an auto parts store. Vacuum the walls to remove dust. Time consuming but not hard to do.

I removed it just like is beeing suggested, then I burned it with a small propane bottle attached to a torch: be careful not to stay too long in the same place; then use a wire brush and semove all that black soot; clean with aceton aftewards
In my case, I replaced all that smelly mouldy carpet with furring strips every 2 feet or so, then got sheets of foam insulation (the ones that are sold at Home Depot for about $ 8.00 for a very large sheet; then I used aromatic cedar panels ( I get them here in Houston from someone I know for about $4.00 a piece ( 4 inches x 8 feet, tongue in groove), so for abot $100.00 I did my entire boat (Hunter 33 - 1982)
That was the best thing I doid: mould does not like cedar, not insects, I left it eaw, so it still smells nice, 18 months after I did it

I did not answer in a foreign language, will check out mistakes before I post: "remove black soot", the insulation sheets are placed between the furring strips, " I left it raw"

it's a messy job but well worth it

definitely wear a mask when taking off the old carpet. Also try and carefully remove the sections in one piece to use as templates for whatever material you decide to replace with. My carpet had a foam backer that was inundated with mold, that was the hardest thing to remove. I wish i had an oscillating multi-tool then, it would have made life easier. I used putty knifes and scrapers to remover the foam. I then borrowed the idea from another forum member and used vinyl flooring to replace the carpet. I'm really happy with the results and it's really easy to keep clean.
