I'm taking advantage of this lousy weather and am doing indoor projects. I just bleached and removed mildew from the inner side of the hull. This is in closets and other storage areas. Today I am paining those areas with a fairly good quality latex paint over the rough fiberglass. I want to know what i could use to cover the hull to prevent sweating. I went to Auto Zone and O'Reilly's and they had what looks to be a good product. It was a thin flexible carpet. Only problem is that it only comes in Blue, Black and a very dark Tan. I want it in white. I haven't been to a carpet store yet, but I doubt if they sell anything that thin and flexible. Does anyone know of another product I can use? Tony B

theres only one answer to this as far as I'm concerned. get indoor outdoor fabric backed carpet. Its made out of plastic and no its not the ugly green stuff from years ag. So check it out feels like and looks like fabric, all kinds of colors, Home Depot or Lowes. can put bleach directly on it, won't hurt it. stick it up with a little contact cement... Its cheap, the way to go...

as far as your question goes Tony B

with regard to what you can use to cover the hull to prevent it from sweating, I don't think there is anything you can put on it to stop it from sweating, nothing. You can not stop the sweating, unless you keep the temperature the same inside as you do outside, and even then, you can't stop it. when the dew point gets hit, condensation is going to precipitate out of the air and you will have moisture or sweat regardless of what you have it covered with. the thing to do it to try and keep the temperature uniform, keep the climate inside the boat with a low humidity level, keep everything opened up and lots of air circulation. with the boat in the water in the winter and the temperature difference between the water temp and the air temp., you will get condensate more than likely. open it up and keep the air very dry and circulating.

Dew Point and Insulation

Sweating(condensation) occurs when the SURFACE temp hits or goes below the dew point. We live aboard which means that the boat is heated during the colder months. There are more air leaks on a boat than Carter has pills. If for example. the air temp in the main salon is 75, chances are that the air in the hidden compartments is around 50 when the outside temp or water temp is 40. Uninsulated fiberglass is a good heat conductor which means it will conduct the heat out of the surrounding air and into the water or outside the boat. This in effect reduces the fiberglass (surface) temp. bringing it closer to the dew point and increasing the chance of condensation. On the other hand, if you have insulation of any form including carpeting, the air temp in the hidden areas will not get as cold because of the insulation and the carpeting/insulation now becomes the 'new' surface. The new surface is now warmer and less chance of going below the dew point. That is why your walls in your home dont sweat, but yet your window glass does. Or something like that. Tony B

go to any carpet store and look at indoor outdoor carpet, you won't believe it. very nice stuff now a days, made out of plastic, feels like the stuff you put in your house, fabric backed so acts as a wic on all mosture, can put bleach directly on it if/when needed... and its priced great. start going with marine liners and all that and your going to pay big and get the same thing...
