Carbon monoxide detectors

I just finished reading a rather disturbing report about the number of carbon monoxide deaths that occur each year in boating. While the majority are on gas powered boats there were a number of them resulting from diesel engines and propane appliances. I have decided to mount three in Angels' Grace (1 in each stateroom and 1 in the salon) but was curious how many of you already have CO detectors already on your boat.

Vent your Propane

Hi Charlie--Anything running propane needs to be vented outside. Also remember that propane is heavier than air so vend accordingly. As long as you are vented correctily you should not have problems. That being said monitoring can never hurt but remember to change the batteries! Most people don't even remember to change the batteries in the smoke dectectors at home and if the batteries go bad . . . well you get the idea.Good Luck.--Dan

You're right

If you look at the ABYC standards particularly A1.8.4 you will see that the venting must be at the bottom of the locker and no less than 1/2" inside diameter.Also the CO detectors (ABYC A-24)must meet marine standards and are hardwired to the 12 volt system. the ones you buy at K-mart ARE NOT good and won't last in the marine enviroment. Purchasing them you have basically wasted your money. The marine ones run about $100 eachCharlie
