My 2009 41DS came with 3 Co-Star 12V CO detectors, each with three wires (two red, one yellow). Need to replace them but can't find any three wire models. Any suggestions?

Replaced

I replaced mine with ones from HD that use 3- AA batteries and they do both smoke and Cabon Monoxide and they use voice too.
Easy to install and were alot cheaper than the 12volt ones for sure,no clue why you have 2 red wires.

Why do you think you need to replace them after only 4 years ? Are they some how all malfunctioning at the same time? That's weird? I could believe one malfunctioning by its self ,say giving a false alarm or no alarming at all. But all three at once tells me something else is going on..... Like over heating of lose ground wire on battery charger, Air-conditioner or //freezer unit sudden small loss of freon. There could be all sorts of hidden reasons or (early warning signs) for units sounding off for no apparent reasons. My Smoke/Fire/CO detectors are hard wired . Also seem to have low battery alarm and are 12 years old . I test them from time to time with a slight wisp of smoke from a lit match. The detector in the main saloon has proven quite sensitive in alerting to any freon leaks or bad electrical connections in the past. Even alerting when engine alternator failed or when running engine in the slip and the wind blowing the wrong way and the exhaust blowing back down the main companionway.... I blow them out from time to time with a burst of clean dry air. If you use an air can be-careful of the freezing effect. You want to avoid any sweating ... Just Saying...

Just a guess, but some wired-in style detectors have networking capability. If one alarms it will enable all units to alarm, thus warning all people in all areas.

Mine seem to have a time delay.... The unit in the effected area will sound first then seconds later the others will start to sound. That has been my experience anyway.....Don't quote me because I could be wrong but the main one that sounded first I believe will have different leds lit up.

Re: under standing marine fire/smoke/co detectors

Got something weird going on with one of my detectors. Everytime I leave after working on the boat and coming back the next day (boat is still on the hard due to being delayed due to lousy spring weather) the starboard side detector is beeping about every 20 to 30 seconds..thought this could be due to a bad battery but both batteries are reading above 12 volts. After I reset the detector it stays reset until I come back the next day. I'm still concerned it could be a battery but it seems odd that that could be it since both batteries are reading above 12v.

Ken you are right it could be a battery overheating and venting or it could be some sort of bad electrical connection putting off fumes. That's what happened to me when I first got my boat I was having similar problems ... After combing thru boats entire electrical systems 120v a/c system and then 12volt systems ... I was sitting there staring at battery charging and pondering what it could be, when one of thoughs voices in my head whispered a suggestion that maybe I should pull off the backing cover access plate on the battery charger. Had to hang up side down with flash light to see the wiring connections as I got my face with in 12 inch of charger I smelled something and noticed the yellow insulation on the 12 volt ground wire looked weird. It had been getting hot because some slacker at the factory who did the install of battery charger did not pay attention to what the hell he was doing.:cussing::cussing::cussing: That connection was lose. Yes a bad 12 volt battery ground can heat up and catch fire just like the 12 volt plus side!

Ken.... If you have totally checked out all of the above then here is something else to investigate.... Do you have any new plastic or vinyl products you are now leaving on board. Example I have some white mesh exterior hatch cover shades..... I call them my Mahari desert shades that zip onto the side of my Bimini for summer use. Even 12 years later I have to keep them in a sealed storage bag. The smell is so toxic.:puke:

Robert,

Good point, I've got a lot of stuff on the boat I don't normally have including some vinyl flooring sheets for protection while I'm working on the boat. Could be closing the boat up at night could be causing some kind of vapors off the vinyl to collect that I wouldn't normally have during the day when the boat is opened up.

I think they forgot to add something to the instructions..Like..... Because our lawyer says so........ besides that our account says if we made our products that lasted any longer then we would go out of business.
That being said then I would like to add....
Now if your detectors are living in very hostile environment say heavy humidity salty moist air , cigarette or cigar spewer coating the interior of boat and internal componites of detector unit with nicotine and soot . Then I would be surprised if any of your electronics on your boat would last more then 12 months. So that may be the reason for such a conservative play it safe number.

Hi there,

Typically CO detectors are good for ten years and date stamped on back. Twelve volt gas detectors Including CO are notoriously sensitive to small fluctuations in power. The extra wire is usually to interconnect multiple detectors. Go out and replace with units that have individual battery power.

Does your smoke detector have a backup battery in it? If it's chirping intermittently it could just be needing a new backup battery. Also check voltage right at the smoke detector to make sure that it equals what you're showing on the batteries.

Chirping

Mine started chirping 1 at a time and at the start every time I would return to the boat 1 or 2 would be chirping and would resett them and checked and checked and checked but read some place they need to be replaced 5 or some thing years not really sure.
Like I said I replaced all 3 with ones from Home Depart or Ace that use 3-AA batteries and look and fit same place and name brand.
