I heard tell from someone in a casual conversation that if you have a 40 ft boat or bigger in CT, you are required to have a Captain's license even if it's your own personal craft and you're not running charters, just personal use. Can anyone confirm or debunk that, thank you.

USCG vs. State

A Captain's License is a Coast Guard (federal) operating regulation and is not needed for a purely recreational craft. From their website: "The Coast Guard does not issue or require operator licenses for recreational boats (any vessel used exclusively for pleasure or non-commercial purposes)." It appears that CT does require a 'safe boating certificate' for pleasure craft. I did not see anything with regards to requiring a captain's license for any length of boat if it is a pleasure craft. Refer to http://www.dep.state.ct.us/rec/boating/certification.htm Probably wouldn't hurt to call the state to verify. Dave Crowley Wind Dreamer

I have a USCG Masters Lic. (Captains). It is only required if you are doing boating commercially. Take money from someone for boating and you need the paper.

Ameribritalian: If you are a resident of Connecticut, you need to get a safe boating certificate to operate a recreational boat. The course takes 8 hours (similar to a Power Squadron course) and requires passing a multiple choice test. Mike: While we have many taxes here, there is no property or other tax on boats. The only fee I pay is the annual registration fee of $140 for my C320.

Pete, lots of towns in CT have "property tax"

on "vehicles" like cars you own. But like you said the "tax" on boats are on a sliding scale depending on the length of your boat and at least not on the "value" of the boat like the tax on cars

USCG Supercedes CT

If you have a Coast Guard license (as I do) you don't need to get the state certification. However, as previously mentioned, if you accept pay (or barter) for your services, you must have the Coast Guard paper.
