Capsize

I have a '78, 25 ft. Venture. I have been sailing it almost a year. I have yet to see just how much she can handle. I have heard stories that the boat can capsize pretty easy. Can anyone give me an idea of what the boat is capable of. Thanks

Stable

My wife and I have had our Mac 25 in some pretty rough waters, including the gulf stream with northerly winds and t-storms. Our boat has proved incredibly stable. No blowdowns. We have been careful not to have too much canvas up during high winds, but basically I think the Mac 25 rates more stable than average.

I have mentioned this before on this forum, but the single most important item to keeping the 25 upright is to make sure the keel is locked down. If you just let it swing down and go, a strong gust could heel you over to the point that the keel would just fold back up against the bottom of the boat, and over you would go. The lock down is a bolt that is inserted above the keel pivot bolt in the keel trunk. The keel has a hole in it for the bolt to pass through. I would also suggest putting some packing on either end of the bolt to help seal out the water. (I use rubber washers and big fender washers.) After that, the boat will take more punishment than you will want to endure. Good luck, happy sailing.
