Hope this helps: The Capsize Screening Formula was developed by the U.S. Sailing Association as a rough rule of thumb, helpful in comparing the initial resistance to capsize of various boats. Boats with a Capsize Screen factor of 2 or less will have a normal initial resistance to capsize and will in general be safer offshore boats than boats which exceed this value. The lower the value, the better, all other things being equal.

More about How long upside down!!!!

I think that the CSF is more about how long a boat will remain inverted than initial stability. The numbers are right in that less than 2 is better. A really good number might be a 1.68 for an Alberg 30 a realtively bad number might be a 2.21 for a Beneteau Oceanis 300. It is a good number that is relatively easy to obtain to compare boats. But it isn't a rule it is just an indication. Tom
