We are the happy owners of a 1981 Hunter 22. Being new sailors, we were wondering what would have to happen to cause the boat to capsize.

Linda, sounds like you have the same questions I had a year ago when we bought ours. If you search the archives, I received some great information from the good folks on here. My two cents, having owned our 82 H22 for a whole year now and sailing it a ton, is that you (well, at least us) will turn in to the dock well before you'd get anywhere near a capsize. I've had ours locked in at a heel of 30 degrees with a reefed main and jib and the boat was solid as a rock. If the conditions had become any worse we'd have turned in. ( I know, 30 is too much for speed, etc., but damn it was fun!) My wife still worries about turning this thing over, but I'm told we need serious wind and waves to do that. Not sure what size swells you get where you are, but anything under 4-5 feet and I wouldn't worry. Happy Sailing David (Sea Monkeys)

General information

It is required that boats be designed self righting when above 20 feet per regs for hull numbers to be issued as I was told a long time ago. Probably some truth but having been once in the insurance industry, I doubt that insurance companies would underwrite manufacturers that did not have self righting included in their designs.
