We have a Hunter 336 with a 56 foot mast... I note the Bridge in the Cape May (NJ) Canal has a high tide height of 55 feet. When I was traveling South last Fall Locals advised I not try the Canal even at low tide!!! They led me to believe the height was inacurate.. Has anyone gone thru the Canal with a 336 or a 56' mast? Expect we will be approaching the area in early to mid May on out way Home.. Wilkie Marvel

1 foot too low!

I remember back in 1979 our friends had an Irwin 39. The bridge was listed asthe same height as their mast. We kids(at the time) hung outboard on the boom to list the boat a bit. No use we lost all the intruments up top and crushed the sheves for the halyards. It was an expensive gamble to save four or five hours.

Beware of Power Lines Too

It's been a while since I've looked at the charts, but if you press your luck by getting tricky to sneak under the bridge, you may find yourself dangerously close to power lines that cross near the bridge. To be safe you need at least 15 ft. clearance between top-of-mast and the lowest sag of the power line.

Trapped

The new owners of our last boat became trapped between the two fixed bridges in the Cape May canal. It had a 61' verticle clearance. No problem with the power lines but they banged everything up top when they were swepted by the current. It tokk a few weeks for a very low tide and heeling the boat to escape the grip of these two 55' bridges.
