capacity for Capri 22

Last summer we were riding in a friend's speed boat with several small children and got a ticket from the Sheriff for being over capacity. Does anyone know what the actual capacity for the Capri 22 is? I would imagine 5 adults while sailing but what about motoring?

How many Life Vests did you have on board? The manual says it has 4 Adult Berths! I've read the cockpit can accommodate 6-8 people. I think you can contest this decision, assuming you had at least 6 Life Vests on board! Let us know.

Good question. My power boat had tag on it stating max capacity. As such the authorities would go by that regardless of how many life jackets you had on board, of course as long as you had enough for your passengers.
Frankly more than 6 adults on the Capri would be too many

The boat will hold WAY more than you can cram in the cockpit... if you had the life vests you could contest it, the Capri 22 doesn't have a limit, which is why it does not have a plaque. Our sailing school regularly had 4 students, and sometimes 2 teachers. I defy the water police to argue with the combined experience of the 2 skippers of that vessel (a Coast guard Aux member, and a Coastie).

Didn't Captain Bligh sail 4,000 miles in a 19 ft. boat with 15+ sailors with him ?

But on the other hand I am sure there is a "catch all" law you could be ticketed with even if you had sufficient life jackets.
Such as reckless boating .....

Weather permitting tomorrow evening I go for my first sail. Cataract surgery grounded me for a while. Next Monday second eye gets fixed.

Thanks all for the replies- I should clarify that last summer the ticket was in my friends ski boat, not a Capri. We got out of the ticket since the combined kid weight was less than the plaque for number of adults/weight in his Sea Swirl.

This summer I'm hoping to take another family out on my Capri 22 with us to watch a Fourth of July fireworks show on Puget Sound. We will likely motor out and have plenty of life jackets.

4th of July fireworks. I have done this many times on my boat. Hudson River. Nice way to spend an evening.
But there will be a lot of crazies out, along with those who have partied too much ( get the drift). When the fireworks end ALL the boats start up and try to leave at the same time. Lots of wakes, water gets very rough. Best to sit for 15- 30 minutes after the fireworks end, then start heading back. Make sure your lights work and battery is fully charged.

Ok, sorry I had to reread... the Capri 22 you would have no problem... a speedboat likely has a plaque telling you max weight, max crew size (in numbers and lbs) and max boat/motor/crew (if the boat is an outboard model).

But sailboats over say 16 feet, are either exempt or can hold more people then you can fit. Some logic should be applied of course... I suspect if you crammed 8 adults aboard a capri 22, someone might say, um NO. But yeah our local sail club had 6 regularly on it.

This link will give you all the information you need. The USCG publishes a Builder's Handbook that explains the regulations. It covers various aspects of boat construction for safety. You may want to read through them if you contemplate any modifications to your boat!

Boats under 20 feet LOA require floatation. Over 20 feet, it is not specifically required.

Number of people could be higher than what are on the placard. But a manufacturer can derate the capacity.
