Hi All, I just purchased a new sewing machine from Sailrite. Pretty cool. I have done a few projects (winch covers, gear bags, pockets, etc.) but I'm planning to do a canvas companionway screen. I want to have a snapped in "frame" with a zip in screen. I would also like to have a zip in canvas piece as well for when we need to block wind and rain but don't want to put in the 3 piece door. I'm looking for design ideas. Has anyone made one of these or had someone make one? If so, could you pass on some tips or suggestions? Better yet - any pictures? Thanks

KISS

I made a frame screen which I thru out, it was silly. What we ended up with is to seprate covers. Both have two wooden dowels which are cut the proper lenght, one to cross the companionway at the top and the other at the bottom. Then we made up a lined piece of sunbrella with tight pockets at the ends for the dowels, the fabric the lenght of the companionway. Just open and drop in, roll up around dowels when done. Repeat with fiberglass screen material. Wouldn't trade it.

canvas hatch screen

I have one with the canvas(sunbrella) frame that snaps in the bug screen is sewed in instead of zipped and it has a canvas flap that rolls up or snapps in over the screen. then the entire thing rolls up and stores on the campainion way cover. work for us. Put window shade weights in the bottom to keep in down in a breeze.

Cover

Made my pattern out of an old plastic shower curtain. Cut it out and did the "sewing" with a stapler. When I had exactly what I wanted I took it to a shop that sews awnings and had them make it up out of sunbrella. You wont have to do the last part. I put it on every time I'm finished sailing the boat. It looks great, keeps out the dust, etc. but more important, it protects the bright work from UV.

this works well

i have a similar setup as howard. i do not have the screen, just quilted sunbrella. however, when the fiberglass companionway hatch is closed (this is on almost all boats, the canvas collects water and gets pretty nasty. i had the canvas guy build pockets for stainless tubing about every 8 inches or so. the tubing is 3/8 thick wall, the pockets are vinyl. i also had him put vinyl where the cover runs on the hatch runners and at the bottom (with sand weight as suggested). the cool part, is that when we are at the boat, we never have to slide the main hatch....the tubing supports the cover and allows it to dry when we leave the boat and it rains.

One piece design

Saw this at the club one day. The screen frame was just canvas that attached to snaps in the companionway. Like the edges of the dodger do to the deck. The bug screen and canvas where both attached at the "frame". The bug screen had a zipper down the middle of it which allowed passage through the companionway. This 'center zipper" arrangement was much easier to use than other screens I've seen. The canvas had the same center zipper arrangement but was secured by straps of cloth on the frame. Just the way you roll up the dodger front window and secure it.

SWMBO love airflow in the boat. SO I built a screen door that slides into the regular door slats. From that we decided on adding a snap over sunbrella cover to prevent rain from getting in. Well that was not enough, so she made a cover that sits over the companion way. So we would not have to add any snaps to the fiberglass, we put a tube of birdshot down each side, and snaps to match the cover for the door. Yes it weighs 6 #'s, but the air flow is great, and the gnats / biting flies stay out!

hatch screen and window

my window is doger plastic cut to the size of my hatch boards then i cut teak strips and finished them with sitkins .Then i screwed small screws thru ss washer thru the plastic. The window slips in the the hatch board track on my C 30 the hatch is vee shaped so with the top closed i swing the door up on top of the hatch to get out and i lock the door with a hook and eye the screen is the same and you could sew canvis around to dress it up John

How about some pictures!!!

These all sound like great solutions. How about posting some pictures of your various screening engineering? That would be great!
