Last year a bought a Catalina 30 84 with a m25 motor. The boat had been basically abandoned for a couple years. First thing I notice was a that the shaft coupling and stuffing box where extremely rusted, because the stuffing box was leaking big time even with the shaft was not turning. I repacked the stuffing box at that time and today I tried to take out the shaft coupling so I could replace it. After taking the four bolts and nut (not easy task) I expected the shaft to move aft freely...but it didn't. I thought maybe the were stucked together because of some rust so I grabbed the hammer and started hitting the coupling (not to hard to breake anything inside the transmission) and they wouldn't come appart. I try pulling hard from the propeller and nothing. This is the first time I am doing this .Am I missing something? Thanks

A good PB Blaster soak will probably help but shield the

transmission from the over spray. By a fanatic about this. You should plan on light hammer thumps as someone turns the propeller a little at a time so that you can jar this all the way around. Like you said you don't want to break anything so work accordingly.

Can you not get

Can you not get the coupling to seperate, or can you not get the shaft out of the coupling. If the two halves of the coupling are rusted together, after a good soaking with PB blaster, and letting it sit a day or so, try driving a small chisel between the two parts of the coupler. Don't hit it too hard, but you apparently already know that. If you can't get the coupling off the shaft, as a last resort, take an angle grinder with a cut off wheel, and split the coupling at the key way. Be sure to cut it at the key, so when you go through, it won't get the shaft.

Loosen...tighten...

If you are trying to get the shaft out of the coupling, you can back the coupling out a bit and put a spacer between the shaft and the transmission plate that is just a bit smaller than the shaft. The tighten (re-install) the coupling tot he transmission. The shaft should back out the distance of the spacer. Loosen it back up, put in a longer spacer, and tighten again. You may have to get longer bolts at some point, and it takes some time, but it works well. Steve

Steve's Right

Steve's process will get the shaft flange off if you haven't missed removing the set screw. Now assume you still can't budge the transmission side flange (you probably don't need to remove it anyway). However, say the shaft is 1" diameter; get short bolt of 3/4 to 7/8" thread diamenter touching the transmission shaft with the larger hexagonal bolt head touching the shaft flange side. Install 4 temporary 3" bolts to pull both flanges together with that large bolt in between puhing inward on the transmision side shaft. Plan on installing new keyway stock after wire brush cleaning both flanges of rust.
