Cannot Raise Mainsail

We have a Hunter 27 with a US Spars in mast furling system. We cannot raise the mainsail because the main halyard carrier is sticking inside the mast after a foot or so. It is catching fast and won't move.

Is it possible we have too much bend in the mast and lessening the rigging tension will help or should we consider other options?

Not sure where Port of Newcastle is but I have heard of furling foils being damaged by freezing if the mast is stored in a way that lets water sit on the inside. Obviously you would require the correct temperatures to freeze the water.

Mast bend usually affects the furling of the sail.
