I've got the urge to mount my cannon to the fore deck of my hunter 22. It's got a 1 inch bore and is about 2.5 foot long. Anybody made a mount that will secure it so when fired it won't recoil off the deck? I think it will need some recoil movement to avoid shattering the deck from the shock.

I'm thinking about using an electric firing trigger so I can stay in the cockpit and fire it.

Thanks.

I am intrigued by your ideas and wish to subscribe to your newsletter.

What type of mount/carriage does it mount to? Old time naval guns were monted on a wheeled carriage using block and tackle to control/arrest recoil and reposition the gun after reloading.

I was the Club's race officer for many years and we had a very nice pair of 1" bore bronze starting cannon. I used to fire these from my foredeck, though not bolted down.
As long as you only ever fire blanks the recoil should not present any problems.

I too like where you are going with this. Warning shots could be fired at power boats encroaching on my personal boating space.

I've thought of mounting sound cannons as well...supposed to be very effective at keeping Lake Michigan pirates at bay.

Have you considered a carbide cannon? IT WORKS. :evil:

I have made more than a few over the years. Not much recoil.. ;) You can see one large on I built way back. I posted a small (less than 3 min) Youtube video at;

It is shown at about 30 seconds into the video.

I also made a couple for a parade our boat was in.

I have a large potato gun I keep in my office. Every now and again I go out front of the building and fire it off. Always a big hit. It would easy to make one look like a canon.

Recoil is a problem with mine. It's on a sled right now and tends to recoil several feet with force when fired. It dented a piece of pressure treated step riser this fourth of July... I'm thinking of putting it on a set of rails that I can secure to the metal toe rails and control the recoil with a spring to allow movement and bring it back into battery.

I use a shot glass of black powder and pack it with soda box cardboard to get a really good boom!

Potato Guns can get you in trouble in MD

There was just recently a woman on the news here who had her home raided by the MD State Police looking for the potato gun her husband had just bought. Weird thing was they had two DHS guys with them who just happened to ask her if she was the reporter who had written the stories critical of the TSA. And Oh yeah, a month later they called her to let her know she could pick up the files on the TSA they had just happened to find - but were not listed on the search warrant. We live in interesting times.

I love cannons. I've had this one for years. It comes out of the carriage from below and becomes a swivel cannon mounted on cabin top winch. It has a one inch bore and is very, very loud.... heh heh. Causes a bit of trouble too.

If a cannon was fired at someone as a warning shot they may not think it was a blank but a miss. Might retaliate with a flare gun - if their aim was good you would be sorry.
