WOW!

Should be a heck of a trip. I know a few people who have done it. Can't speak for Cancun, but when it comes to Mobile, you can typically expect fair winds in the morning, dying off around lunch time, and then returning in the early to mid afternoon. I haven't sailed very far from shore, so not much experience out there. Typical days include a couple of thunderstorms running around in the area. They are not generally widespread, but usually small, intense and fast moving and usually in a west to east or southwest to northeast pattern. Keep in mind this is one of the wettest parts of the country most years. It's not a hazzard, but something to keep in mind. That's all I can think of for now. Any other questions about Mobile? It's a great town.

Down Wind all the way

Are you going straight through or planning a stop at the Dry Tortuga's - a little out of the way, but would keep you out of the main shipping routes. look for a copy of Calder's "Cruising Guide to the Northwest Caribbean" for detailed wind/current maps. This is out-of-print so you will have to try to get it from the library system. The Yukatan Current splits into the Gulf Stream - head through the Florida Straight, and a current that goes straight to New Orleans. This of course is a heavily traveled area by freighters/tankers. Personally I would do the Dry Tortugas, Sanibel, Sarrasotta, Tampa Bay, Big Bend route, and do some sight seeing along the way.

houston to yucatan

I met a dentist who said that he raced every year from Houston to the yucatan. You might check around the internet and find out about that race for some information. I've been to Cozumel in April and it feels like Mobile in June!!! You will sweat a lot!!!! Make sure that you have plenty of water.
