The Government of Canada has introduced an increased approach distance for the Southern Resident Killer Whale (SRKW) for a specified time period in BC waters.

The clock starts on 1 June 2026!

Last year, while transiting north after checking in at Bedwell BC, I erred in my route selection and briefly transitioned through the "NO-GO" zone off South Pender heading out into Swanson Channel. I got home and received a "You did a bad thing!" letter. I intentionally headed out into Swanson Channel for the wind and to avoid the whale habitat. I showed the representatives at the Seattle boat show that the information about the NO-GO Zone is unclear and not on the Vector navigation software I had on my phone. 2 months later, they had corrected that with the map data. I now have a NO-GO zone clearly on my chart plotter.

Check out the article if you are planning a visit this year. I suspect they are utilizing AIS tracking, and there are coast watchers protecting the SRKW family in BC Waters.

Yeah well someone ought to show the new rules to the whales. Approaching the entrance to Dodd narrows from the South on a flood last week, we encountered a pod of 6 orcas transiting South. No where to run and slack in 10 minutes.

Staying 1000 meters behind them, then the tidal change, and if going with the tide, you stream past them at speeds beyond the rules.

Seems like there, Orcas beware. It is up to them to recognize the conditions and quit playing in the traffic lanes.
