Hi,

The attached photo is from a Yanmar 4JH3E. It is of a petcock that is attached to the working side of the transmission. I cannot find anything regarding what this is or what it does in my owners manual. Obviously I am not an engine guy and am fairly new to this so any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Ahhhhh, it is a drain?
probably for changing the oil. Crack it and find out. If trany fluid comes out then it is an oil drain, if engine coolant comes out then it is the trany cooler portion of the engine cooling plumbing (used to winterize the motor).

I did open it and water with a metalic odor came out - didn't seem like antifreeze, it was clear.

OK, that's a new one. water with a metallic odor???? The only fluids that should be in a trany are cooling water/anti or trany oil.
Can you get a wider shot so we can see what other "plumbing" structures are attached to the unit?
never heard of a raw water cooled trany but it is possible. if so how long has it been since the engine was run?

water cooled tranny

Sure lots of tranny are water cooled. E.G. Volvo. The raw cooling water goes through a passage threaded through the inside of the tranny to cool the oil before entering the engine water pump.

I would say it's a drain for winterizing. The "water with a metallic odor" is probably just stagnant water that got stuck in the valve. Try running it until it clears up.

I second the run it for a bit longer and see what comes out. And then check your coolant and see if it matches.
