Can Pink Antifreeze Ruin Toilet Components?

Peggie:

Our waste system has been winterized per your book specs. The boat is on the hard. As a final step, I left some pink antifreeze in the toilet bowl to serve as an additional odor trap from the rest of the system. Could this harm or prematurely degrade the flapper and joker valves if allowed to sit over the winter? Thank you in advance!

It's ok, but unnecessary

What you SHOULD have done instead leaving antifreeze in the bowl "to serve as an additional odor trap from the rest of the system" was thoroughly flush out the system with plenty of clean water BEFORE you winterized.

And if you just poured antifreeze down the toilet, what you SHOULD have done was disconnect the head intake line from the thru-hull, stick in a jug of antifreeze...and pump the entire gallon through the system into the holding tank. Just pouring antifreeze into the bowl only winterizes half the system...it doesn't protect the pump or the intake line because nothing in the bowl recircultates through the intake lineand pump.

Whyizzit that so many people ask "is what I DID ok," instead of asking "what should I do?"

Ms. Peggy:

I am surprised by your response to Bob Sail. I have aways found your responses very well written and timely. I don't think Bob Sail deserved the respnse you gave him.

This is Thanksgiving, and I am thankful for Ms. Peggy that gives good advice, not evil Peggy that insults a honest seeker of knowledge.

Have a great holiday!

Surprised that I would use his post...

As a vehicle to advise others? And also him, if he didn't do it right...'cuz I don't THINK anyone would be too thankful to find a cracked bowl or a pile of sludge that's turned to concrete in the tank next spring.

If he did do it right. he got the answer he was looking for and can pat himself on the head for a good job. :) But if he didn't, he still has time to fix it.

As mentioned initially, I did all that you said I should have done per your book. Thanks Peggie. I'll look elsewhere for the answer to my question.

Q & A courtesies

I was reprimanded recently (offline) by a moderator on this site. I had suggested that a response that included the phrase "I have heard that..." was improper and was not appropriate as an answer to a question of "what position should I leave my transmission in while sailing?" The answerer was simply wrong in saying that it didn't matter for this particular transmission, indicating that forward would work, too. That would have ruined the transmission!!! I suggested that before he answer a question, he should either consider whether he knew enough to answer it (rumors and/or hearsay aren't answers), or use links to definitive manufacturer's data and instructions. The fact that the incorrect poster then argued that he'd said something different than what he originally actually had written didn't earn him any more respect.

The moderator was concerned that I may have chased someone away who may have been new to posting. I understood the sensitivity. However, I did mention that I was more concerned about the original questioner's transmission than I was about a thin-skinned poster who hadn't learned that misinformation is as deadly and wrong as deliberately incorrect information.

This site has one of the very best "How to ask a question" topics I've ever seen. Maybe the moderators should add a "How to answer" section, too.;)

I cheered when I read Peggie's original answer last night, and read it to my wife who agreed.

It's not unreasonable to expect that after having written an entire BOOK about a subject that folks would: --- buy the book --- read it --- implement it -- BUT at least ask a question BEFORE they go do something if they're not sure. And if they'd bought and read the book, that particular question is so basic to the entire concept of how marine toilets work, that it appears he may not have absorbed the contents of the manuscript. Read it again, then.

And folks should not get upset about the answer because a little homework and research goes a looong way.

It's disappointing that some will feel they have to take their marbles and go home. But I applaud those who keep answering questions with facts, and provide opinions where applicable. Opinions, unless specifically identified, have no place in responding to technical questions.

Now, sail trim, on the other hand, is simply voodoo and there are absolutely no right answers on that subject, right Don?:):):)

BobSail, On my first read I thought Peggie had beat you with a stick too...then I read it again and saw that she actually went step by step telling you and anyone who reads this post years from now exactly how it should be done...step by step.
What may have sounded harsh was simply Peggie teaching you...and us...how to do it right.
I would not have hurt feelings as I think you took it.

Just to add

Thanks, Jack, well put. Only one thing to add: it is already in the book, which he said he had and had read.

Considering that the OP said that he had winterized the head system PER PEGGIE's BOOK... I think her response was a bit off. She jumped all over him and ranted about what he should have done... when he DID exactly what she said to do in his book and said so in his post.

It seems to me that Peggie failed to clearly answer the OP's question, which was merely seeking clarification on: "Will pink antifreeze damage the head system components?" The answer is no... but you'd be hard pressed to find that in her response.

BobSail, I have always left additional pink antifreeze in the bowl and have not noticed any premature degrading of any parts. I also reasoned,as you, it was another odor trap .....maybe not needed but I would rather not find out the hard way ! !

Peggie's heading - "It's OK, but unnecessary" was the answer to his question. She then went on and elaborated a little bit on the correct way to do it. She wasn't lecturing him, only trying to keep him from making a costly mistake. Her (and my) humor aren't always taken as humor and as such, aren't always appreciated.
