I'm considering purchase of a 1985 Macgregor 22. Long ago, I sailed a Windmill 15' wooden open boat in Ft. Walton Beach Bay. Other than occasional Hobie rentals, I haven't sailed in 20 yrs. Can I rig and sail this by myself? Thanks.

Sailing this boat alone is easy, raising the mast alone can be done if you have a brace at the stern to hold the masthigh enough to clear the back of the cabin while you get the pin in the foot of the mast. It is not as easy for me as my V21, but it can be done. MG

raising mast

I have a venture 22',am 75 years old and have NO problem raising the mast and sailing the boat solo. BUT you should buy the NEW mast raising system used on the NEW MacGregor 26'. It has a winch and side attachments. The unit costs $100 for the plus about $30 for the new deck mounting and attachment points. Contact any dealer or the builder. Novelman

I made

my own mast raising system for my V222, out of a 2X2, trailer winch, baby shrouds, etc. and thats about it. One person can raise it that way! A couple of people wanted me to post some pics of it in action,, but Ive been so busy lately i didnt get a chance to do it yet! You can actually hold the mast in any postion along the arc of travel with the winch locked!

It is possible

I rigged my V222 for years alone and without a MR System, but it was always easier with another person. They just stood in front of the trailer and pulled on the jib line. The mast is relatively light, so a person can put his back into it and it goes up just fine. Once up, it is easy to secure the pin. Biggest problem was the shroud fasteners- they get backwards and have to be straightened before the mast will go all the way up. Check this before raising. And sailing singlehanded? Without a roller reefing jib? Sure, but you have to do a lot of planning ahead of time. The jib has to be attached and ready, as well as the main. Steering is better if you have somebody else or at least lash the tiller so you have a little time to work. Also, be sure to wear your PFD and it is a good idea to tie in when forward- You never know when you could go over the side and the boat sails away. Not a good thing.

Also on my V222

I put a self-tacking jib system on her and that makes sailing a lot easier too.
