Hi, I believe they say the Max is a 9hp. but have a chance at a good buy on a 15hp. What is the reason for 9hp max? Weight? or ........? If it is the speed of the 15hp, I see no reason to open it up.

it's big

I never see a motor that big on a Mac or similar boat, however Tim the Toolman would like it! More Power! If your transom was strong enough, why not? How much does it weigh? Are you penalizing sailing performance? I like my Merc 9.9hp 2-stroke, it is light, relatively speaking.

Should be ok

If it is an Evinrude/Johnson (OMC model) 15hp then you should be ok since the 9.9 and 15 were basically the same weight and size. Just make sure the shaft is the necessary length. I would get it tuned and a new water pump impeller installed just to be safe. good luck, mark

Check the bracket

Call the manufaturer of your engine bracket before you buy. Mine is a Fulton and they explained the rating is based on weight, thrust and most importantly, torque. If the engine is a killer deal, consider getting a heftier bracket and beef up the backing in the transom.

15Hp!!

You do know that as they increase the HP on outboards they also increases the pitch on the props. With a 15 HP you may find you will be doing hull speed at idel. Think the previous posts figured out that weight won't be your problem, maybe a lower pitched prop from the 9.9 HP motor would fit too. But with that much power you are either not going to be able to go slow, or it will cavitate badly. You are going to need a 4.5" to 5" pitch prop to make it work. I'd reccomend a Tuhatsu (I know I didn't spell that right) 6 HP with the extra long shaft (25") is about the best deal out there today. It even comes with a 5 amp. rectifier. It does work better with a 5" pitch prop, but comes with a 6" pitch prop. The long shaft (20") doesn't come with the rectifier, but it can be aded as an extra, and can be found for arround $1,200 on line. I'm sure you are looking at a much better price on the Evinrude. But just a though as if the motor doesn't fit your needs, you'll be selling it and looking for another motor. By the way, I know several people with boats our size that use a 12 volt trolling motor for docking and it works fine for them. But they keep their boats on a dock where they can recharge their battts, I keep mine on a mooring. No way I'd want to carry bats in the rubber dingy.
