I have recently purchased a 1984 Catalina 30 tall rig and was surprised to see it did not have a vang. The previous owner didn't feel it was necessary but I have come to appreciate the benefits of a vang in a down wind situation. I would be interested to hear if other owners don't think the boom vang adds value to the sailing of the Catalina 30. I would also like to hear from owners who have installed a vang. Did you choose a rigid or block and tackle version and how did you attach it to the mast?

Vang

Sure you can live without one. However, I like my rigid vang because it holds the boom up when not sailing.

Fixed Boom Vang???

In reference to using a Fixed/Rigid Boom Vang on your Cat 30. Did either of you have a boom that rotates like my 1984 Cat 30? If Yes, how did you use a Fixed/Rigid Vang that has both ends basically fixed and unable to pivot with the boom? Or do you have a different, fixed-type Boom.
