Someone who consolidates shipments. We've got a customer in a bind and figured you east coast cruising vets may have been around this track before...

Tropical Shipping has 2 offices; New Jersey and Miami. I'd call them and see who they would suggest; someone they work with. As far as I know, they are the only shipper w/regular scheduled shipments to the Caribbean.

Hi Phil,

AmeriJet in Miami covers most of the eastern Caribbean. G&G Shipping in Dania Beach covers The Bahamas and Turks and Caicos. Good luck.

From where in the Caribbean and what is the destination? Is it for commercial cargo or household move? About 30 years ago met a guy at the San Juan airport trying to convince paying passengers to take a mast as a "carry on" aboard a DC-3 commuter flight to St. Thomas. Things have changed a little.

Re: Can anyone recommend a freight forwarder for the Caribbe

Phil;

I am not sure about what the cargo is. If a sailboat, there are companies like the Beneteau dealer in Charleston who took boats for me to the Caribbean and stood behind the integrity of the captain and boat. If shipping overseas, there is Jack Fitzgerald out of Savannah who arranges for the boats to be shipped overseas for Beneteau, Catalina and Hunter.

If dealing with smaller parts to the Islands, I use to see if UPS or FEDEX could handle with that overnight. You might want to ask Eddie at Hunter whom they used to ship parts in the past overnight. They did that with a rudder once I recall.

I like the "carry-on" mast!

We're trying to get a couple of large sails from Florida to Puerto Rico. The customer originally planned delivery in FL but a medical emergency has them stuck in PR. The shipment is too large for USPS and FedEx/UPS to PR is many hundreds of dollars, even with our discounts.

They're in no hurry so we figured a freight consolidator would be perfect, and we're following up the leads mentioned here.

Thanks for the help!

Phil

You will find most major trucking companies run a container consolidation out of Miami such as Roadway/Yellow. You will also have an import excise tax collected when shipment arrives in Puerto Rico. Best bet would be for them to find a friend sailing to Puerto Rico. Since this is March, most of the traffic will be outbound for points North.

I've used AmCar Freight for shipping large, heavy items to the ABC's (Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao). Great service, highly recommended.

Tropical Shipping would be the easiest and cheapest for Fla/PR. Just drop the sails off at their location and they'll be in PR in a week or so. They might ask you to box them, but that's also easy.
