Attached are a few pics of a pole and a heavy line which were on my boat (H466) when I bought it. No way to contact the previous owner. Can anyone tell by looking at these what they are? Used for? One is a stout pole which is much too short to be a whisker or spinnaker pole with a sheave at one end and a clip at the other. The other item is a thick line (like dock line) with beautiful thimbles and snap shackles. The shackles are the type I'd expect on a sail halyard or sheet but the line is so heavy 5/8 or 3/4. Not sure if these items are at all related but I don't understand either. Please see photos attached. The line is 20' the pole is around 6-8 feet (sorry forgot to measure).
Sails that came with the boat include the main, jib, 2 symmetrical spin and one asymmetric if that helps.

The pole appears to be a "reaching strut". It is used to hold the spinnaker guy outboard to increase the angle (and therefore control) of the guy when close reaching with a spinnaker. It helps keep the pole from banging the headstay in gusts.
The line may have been used to secure the strut (though I don't recall using such a line - and it wouldn't need to be that heavy)

Yup.. a Selden "Jockey Pole"..

See Page 136 of the Selden yacht catalog which can be found here.. click on the digital catalog link up top and select "yachts".

Cheers,

Excellent. Thanks guys (no pun intended). Does the inboard end attach to a fitting to the mast or something on the deck. I 've never sailed with a symmetrical before so I guess it's time to learn.
