Can a vent hose permeate?

I replaced my old sanitation hose with Trident a few weeks ago. I had assumed this hose was permeated, as there was a pretty awful smell in the compartment that houses the holding tank and plumbing. But on closer inspection, I saw that apparently the tank fittings were leaking, likely due to being attached with pipe sealing compound instead of teflon tape, so this was surely the greater contributor to the smell.

I removed the fittings, thoroughly cleaned off the compound from the tank's threads, and put new fittings on (with teflon tape). No leaks now. I also cleaned out underneath the tank, spraying ample amounts of C.P. all along the edge of the tank (so that it would run down to directly underneath the tank throughout it's length), rinsing with water, removing the water with a sponge, and repeating this process several times.

After all this, there is still a noticeable (but substantially reduced) smell in the compartment. However, the one hose I was not able to change was the vent hose (I had ordered 5/8, but apparently my vent hose is 3/4)... I suppose it's safe to assume that this one remaining unchanged component is the source, but I'm a little surprised... can vent hose permeate in normal conditions?

in your boat, under the tank, try , after cleaning, the stuff in pet stores called natures miracle--is awesome and kills odors --if it can kill stink from a male spraying kat, then the holding tank odors in the under tank area should be gone forever after its use--let it dry on the area and should help a lot....i havent had any problems with my vent----they just transmit odors in the air , not fluid, unless grossly overfilled tank....inspect it for residue and replace if there is---that vent tubing doesnt clean well.....smells stay in the stuff.......

If it's the corrugated hose type, it is quite possible it has cracked.

Test it for permeation before replacing it though...which should be done before replacing ANY hoses.

I suspect that your odor is most likely residual odor that's attached itself to surfaces in that area. You were on the right track when you sprayed it with C.P.--although K.O. is a better choice. Your mistake is in rinsing it all out after you've treated. Nothing can kill bacteria and spores if it's not there. So spray all the surfaces in the affected area again, then just let it dry...leaving all hatches and locker doors open so that plenty of fresh air can circulate for 24 hours. That should fix it.

What is C.P. and K.O. . We had a leak from our holding tank ( Nauta flexable tank) we have used bleach, detergent and natures miracle. We think we got rid of the smell we'll know for sure in a week. Just in case we didn't we will try C.P. and K.O. if you can tell us were to get it. Thanks
