Can a Honda 9.9 work with a 260 pedestal?

Can a Honda 9.9 long shaft(20inch) with electric start be adapted to a H260 with pedestal steering. I would like to have the shift and throttle controls mounted on the Edson pedestal. Honda, Hunter, Edson, and my Hunter dealer are unable to answer this question. It seems the problems are getting the proper control cable lengths, will the motor control box fit in the pedestal, and will the cables eventually crimp and break from constantly rotating the motor out of the water when sailing. No one will own up and say it can be done and specify the parts. I know someone out there has done it. In fact I saw a picture of it in the May 99 Sailing magazine's Boat Test article on the H260,which is being given out by Hunter.......HELP PS I contacted Edson and they HAVE stopped selling the pedestal steering system used on the 26. However they are now selling a different design for the 260, which uses a bronze casting to attach to the rudder shaft

I feel your pain

Just thougt I would coment on the remote control option. I have a Hunter 240 and it took me quite a while to convince the dealer to install a remote control unit for my Nissan 5 horse / 4 stroke. They complained about all sorts of things: the cables would bend and break, it would not work, can't find the parts, etc. Boy, you would think they either don't want my money or they know something I don't. I called Nissan and they stated they did not know of any such problems concerning the remote controls. They sell the remote control unit, and the mounting hardware, yet don't sell the cables. Go figure. Anyway, I must be dummer than the day is long, because I went ahead and told the dealer to "make it happen". They were able to get the cables needed from Teleflex. Yet they could not get them directly, they had to get them from a supplier. The dealer is in the process of putting it all together, so I will let you know how this all turns out. You would not think this is such a big deal. Heck, maybe even I could have done it myself?? Good luck, and I hope you get better advice that what I was able to supply. Daniel, s/v Endeavor

Cables Okay

I have a H-26 with the motor controls mounted in the cockpit sence 1995 and have had no problems with the cables bending, to be able to steer the motor I added spacers the moved the motor mount back about 4 inches. Works great.

Best to go to Motorboat dealer

I will add the for outboard motor work, even on a sailboat you are better off going to a Motorboat Shop, they know what they are doing. The sailboat dealer will try to do the work but most of the time they just mess it up.

Evinrude works with pedestal controls

Hi, I recently purchase a H260 new with an Evinrude 9.9, 4 stroke remote control, electric start engine. Hunter installed the throtle and shift controls on the pedestal during assembly. I believe they used Edson control cables with OMC terminations. Contact Jim Bohart at Hunter. He was very helpful in arranging it. (My Hunter dealer said it couldn't be done.) Specify that you want sufficient cable length for tilting and turning the motor on its mount. My motor tilts up just fine without crimping the cables. I don't know about the Honda configuration. If you haven't purshased it yet, I would recommend looking at the Evinrude. I selected it based on the great features and the large number of dealers/service shops in close proximity -- there are at least 6 Evinrude shops near my home in southern New Hampshire. My Hunter dealer did a reasonable job of comleting the installation of the motor, but there are still some unresolved issues that I am having to deal with and it is more difficult because the Hunter dealer is not a qualified OMC service shop. I agree with the comments in another post about having a factory qualified OMC (Or Honda or whatever brand) dealer install it. Fair winds... Tom

Remote contols yes

You can get a cable bracet kit to attach to the Honda 9.9. 10' or 11' 3300 series cables by Teleflex are needed to. You will need to buy the gear and throttle control bracket for your Edson steering just like the ones on the larger boats you might see. There are two kinds with one having control for gear shift on the port side and throttle on the starboard side. The other one has the gear shift on the front. The four cup holder has to be reduced to two cup holder to allow for clearence of the gear and throttle shifters. The real tricky part is getting the cables throught the steering but you can do this with the aid of a small 1/2 inch pipe that is 3 to 4 feet long. The other hard part is securing the cables to the pedestal. Finally, you do have to modify the lever bracket to wok but when that is done, you have a nice system for motor controls on the pedestal. You would not need to modify the lever brackett if you added pedestal mounted compass. Regarding the Hunter 240 side mount control in the cockpit, this can be done too. You do have to gouge part of the foam bouyancy to install the three bolts. Recommend you repalce the foam that you take out and be very careful not to take much and wash off immediately as it feel like sand. You will need 8 ft. length 3300 series teleflex cables for this. I suggest a rubber boot or sometimes known as a bellows boot to run the cables through the boat. It has a tie wrap that is used as a draw string to close with so water cannot come into the back of your boat. You will need to purchase the cable bracket kit for your engine. Nissan and Tohatsu are the same engines and the bracket kit shares the same serial or id number. I have seen power boat dealers unable to install either the above. In either case it can be done.

Remote Linkages..Yes!!

One of the first improvements I made to our H260 w/9.9 Honda was to run engine controls to the pedestal AND slave the engine to the rudder. This was our first boat and I found docking and close quarters manoevering to be a nightmare. For the engine controls I used: Edson P/N #870ST Engine controls for #335 Pedestal (2) 8 ft Teleflex Cables (OMC ends , I think) Honda Remote control bracket for 9.9 4 Stroke The installation was pretty easy. The controls just bolt to the top of the pedestal using the existing bolt holes w/ extended bolts. Then (with a little patience) the cables are routed down the pedestal and back to the engine. The cables terminate nicely on the remote bracket. The bracket also provides a nice termination point for a connecting arm to the rudder post (lower arm). The rudder end of the connector rod has quick-disconnect type fittings for removal while sailing. Probably took 1/2 day to install and looks great!!(just like the big boats). Good luck, this is an awesome improvement to the boat!! Stephen Dawes H260 Tender Morsel
