Campbell Sailor on a Hunter 36
I also installed a Campbell Sailor on our Hunter 36, 1982 vintage with a Yanmar 3GM engine. The propellor that was on there before was also a three blade prop and I was not experiencing a vibration problem. THe propellor was oversized (15 inch diameter, three blade, 13 inch pitch) for the engine as it would not allow the engine to develop full rpm (3400 rpm) in forward.(Limited to about 2800rpm). Since the propellor was showing signs of pitting and had been changed from an original pitch of 11 inches, I decided to go with the Campbell Sailor. The new prop is a 15 inch diameter, three blade unit with a 9 inch pitch. I found it to be lighter than the other prop. It works very smooth in forward and reverse, but it still does not allow the engine to develop full throttle. The engine now develops about 2900 to 3000 rpm in forward. I would like it to develop full throttle as it is supposed to, but at this time not sure whether there is something wrong with the engine or whether the prop is still oversized. I have checked with the dealer in Canada where I purchased the prop and they feel pretty confident that the prop as pitched should be the correct one for my engine, but it may need to be repitched to a slightly lower value.Other than the fact that the engine will not develop its full throttle capability I am very satisfied with the prop. I have checked just about everything on the engine to make sure it is not the limiting factor. The engine has new pistons, rings, cylinder wall sleves, connecting rod bearings, one new connecting rod, overhauled head, new mixing elbow, new exhaust hose, new waterlift muffler, new injectors and new fuel lift pump. The only item I have not replaced is the injection pump. (Three thousand hours on the engine) I measured the exhaust back pressure and found it to be slightly higher than that recommended by Yanmar, but not much can be done to reduce it to the spec limit. (Water lift muffler is the limiting item)Hope this helps.Ernie
