I am closing on a 1995 Hunter Legend 40.5 next month.

Can I ask

Where you got your bimini and would you share a pic?

I was looking at the pre-measured one on this site, but when I look at the picture I can see that it clearly overlaps the dodger and that looks to me to be a pain when trying to get forward.

I am struggling here as they are asking me to take measurements for a custom one but I am currently in Iraq and not going to be back until next month. When I do get back I have to sail my boat 100 miles to get it hauled out in a place I can work on it and I can see me getting frazzled in the sun.

So what I would love to know is, what sort of Bimini you have, a picture, pro's and con's and if the shop you had it made might still have the measurements. (They have a custom measurement here for the rail mount but its length is only 49 inches which I fear is far too short)

I know its a risk going off like this but its one I think I am stuck with as it stands :(

Thanks all

Redunc

I'd Wait

I think you are better off waiting until you get back. If the custom biminis on this site are not satisfactory, you need to communicate on the boat with a canvas professional to get exactly what you want and get their input which will cover a lot of stuff you probably didn't consider. This is too big an expense to try to shotgun from Iraq. I'll post a photo of mine, although I don't think it will serve you at all well. Note that it has a zippered insert that connects the bimini to the dodger. It is not a problem getting in and out of the cockpit; just a matter of getting used to it. By the way, you can e-mail the folks on this site and they can make modifications to the stock item to suit you if you would rather have something ready when you get back. Good luck on whatever you decide.

Thanks Rick

Looking at what you have its the exact thing I am after and pretty much bang on what I described to the shop on this site. (zippered insert to dodger etc)

I hear you on the shotgun from Iraq - still wondering that myself but know for the 100miles in florida waters overhead protection is a must and I would love to have something ready.

Where did you get yours done may I ask and do you have a picture closeup at all?

bimini for a 40.5

See my avatar, I'd recommend the full bimini instead of dodger and smaller bimini. Also the zippered curtains are very handy for keeping out the bugs, rain while sailing, the cold.
Thanks for your service, been there and know it sucks.
I'd wait till you pull the boat and can get some better info. I'm thinking an umbrella lashed to the rigging as a 100 mile = 20 hour fix.

The full bimini? No dodger at all - what about spray?

Thats a beautiful setup you have there Bill. I suspect that cost a pretty penny

Hey Redunc-
I have to echo what Rick and the guys are saying and that is to wait until you get back. My bimini covers pretty much of the cockpit and overlaps the dodger a bit. While I would prefer an arrangement like Rick or Bill's (I paticularly lust after the full curtain zip ins oh baby-sorry I digress) the arrangement on Emmanuel does get me good rain coverage in the cockpit as long as it's not blowing around too much. I am also attaching a picture of my bimini. I don't know if I mentioned it before but my Hunter 40.5 is a 1995 also.
I would also like say thank you for your service to our country. I am very grateful. Best of luck to you!

Mine is very similar to Bill's in that it is also a full enclosure. Here are some photos.
Rick, that's a real nice setup as well, I like that you have all that window on each panel.

I think this is going to be the biggest expense on my boat...

POTL

I might just do hundreds of zip ins now I know what it does to you ;)

Well let me tell you as there are 12 curtains you can pretty much choose if you want wind in the cockpit or not. We find that putting down the windward curtains takes the sting out of any spray (don't get that much anyway except in 5+' waves and winds +20) and wind that might be out there. On summer evenings just install the bug screens (12, 3,6, and 9 o’clock curtains) and you get a pleasant breeze without those skeeters. In the summer we sail with all the curtains rolled up but ready should there be a storm or for those occasional bug storms that occur on the Bay from time to time.
We absolutely love it. It is getting pretty old and we are going to replace it this year. i priced it out for the full Monty at around $500 if I DIY. The sewing is pretty straight forward.
If you promise to buy me a beer I'll take pictures of the thing off the boat on a flat surface so you can get an idea of what the parts look like. I even have a line drawing I used to produce the BOM.

Bill

I'd happily buy you several beers but I don't look as pretty as POTL I'm afraid !

If you do ever have the time to take it down and lay it out I'd be extremely grateful.

500$ is that missing a zero can I ask? If not did that include the framework as that is incredibly cheap.

Anything would be appreciated, your setup is perfect.

Thanks for the response

Sorry for missing the requests Redunculous and PotL. I'm on the final assembly for getting the boat back in the water and have been distracted. I will not get home by dark tonight but should be able to get some pictures and scan in my line drawing with dimentions and seam diagrams. For the record the $500 is for top and curtians but does not include the clear window material or the bails. It has two sets of two bails which I'll try and get some cell phone pics of to show attachment and dimentions.
