Hey all:
Looking at a couple of Cals for purchase. Main question is the transom construction, because both these boats have outboards. On one of them (2-27) the wood mounting block for the engine lift needs rebedding. Water has been able to get behind it. I didn't think of checking for delam or wet wood in there when I looked the boat over (no other issues with wet core on deck.) I know that even if it is wet it is sometimes a difficult condition to detect.
Is the transom balsa cored or is it marine ply? Is there a noted problem with Cals' transoms getting wet and needing replacing? The recent issue of Good Old Boat had a nice article on 2-27s and did not indicate this as a major problem.
Thanks in advance,
Carlos
