Cal Pump for A/C - Problems

My P42 came with a Model 1200 Cal Pump to supply both air conditioners. The pump always ran hot and the original one finally failed because the internal thermal shut off kept triggering (took a long time to troubleshoot because I did not realize this feature existed in this pump). In the past few years I have gone through several Cal Pumps. The most common failure has been that the seal between the stainless can and the bronze (?) face fails and all the oil comes out. The West Marine people seem to acknowledge that this is an ongoing problem (except the one or two who will say "Problem? What problem?" to almost anything). One suggested that the original stainless mount with the two large hose clamps was the problem, so I changed to the current black plastic mount with the same results. I did notice that on the last pump I installed that the inside of the power cable was soaked with oil. This implies that the cable end is not sealed inside the motor housing. Fortunately, these one year pumps have a two year warranty. The down side is having to do the job every year. Is anyone else having this problem? How have you addressed it? Is the March pump any better?

Victor, our 1991 P42 has a Little Giant raw water.

pump that supplies both heat pumps. After many hours of running the impeller blade collects salt crystals and it has to be taken apart and cleaned. As long as you put it back together the right way (guilty), it runs flawlessly. Terry
