I own a 1975 Cal 34. The model you are looking at is the first version of the 34. Later came the mark II and the mark III. The main diference between the earlier models (like the one you are looking at) and the later models, is that the earlier one's had lower aspect ratio rig (i.e. long boom). Our Mark II sails great. In terms of maintanence, check the bulkhead where the chainplates fasten. This is an area prone to rot. You also may want to check for play in the rudder post (although this can be fixed). Practical sailor has a good review of the Cal 34 for a small price. Good Luck!

Where is Squalicum (SP) Harbor? Anyway, I have a Cal 34, built in 1976 and launched in 1977. I sailed her to the Sea of Cortez a couple of years ago and am thinking of going to Hawaii this summer. I have replaced many things and added many things and i have not spent a lot of attention to the chain plate issue you mentioned. I have however wondered about the chainplate that runs through the sole near the head on down to the keel. There is some rust there that I have wondered about. That's it.

In reply to Jim Alexander's question, Squalicum harbor is in Bellingham Washington (the very North Western tip of the US) How are you preparing your Cal 34 for the run to Hawaii? (In the next few years, I'd like to try the same trip) You mentioned rust on the chainplate in the head. I would consider pulling the grounding wire attached to that chain plate and cleaning the connection between the wire and the plate to make sure it pass current. Ernie
