Cable tension on rudder cable

I had to pull off the cover over my rudder cable system for maintence and found that the cable is a little loose (tension). My question is how much tension should there be? It doesn't slip and the slack is less than a .5 inch but I just wanted to know others experience with this. Also is there any lubrication or special grease that should be applied to this cable? Thanks for your assistance and input. Rs
