Cable diameter for Zinc Anode?

Hi all.
I have a zinc anode with ring terminals that will make it easy to
connect a cable.

I intend to connect it via insulated copper cable to engine block and
hang anode, cable & all over the side (close to prop) when boat is in
salt-water marina.
(Obviously I'll retrieve the cable and anode before starting engine... )

Any advice as to suitable cable diameter/cross-section?

Thanks

John

Thanks Brian. That seems to translate to about 3.2mm diameter.

Is there a simple basis for the recommendation?

All the best.

Hi John,

Mechanical strength is the most important, the current is very very low, so any diameter will do for the electrical part.
Single strand wire takes longer to corrode than multi-strand.

Not really. The main reason is that a wire the size I suggested is more
durable than a thinner wire. Especially on a wire that will be moved around
a bit. Use only tinned marine stranded wire.

I'm no expert on anodes but consider the following :1. If you are putting the anode in and out of the water as required a stranded cable that will be flexible, so can be coiled will be better than a solid conductor that will work harden and break when flexed many times. The break would be hidden by the PVC insulation, so you would have no protection. Solid conductor may have better corrosion resistance but would be better suited for a fixed installation.2. 8 AWG equates to 8.36 mm2. Look at using the next size up that is readily available. Whilst the currents involved are small so are the voltages. Ideal cable would be second hand welding cable. A little larger than required but very flexible.

Hi!

It might not be an option, but there is zink anodes that are made to fit to the combi propeller. I normally change mine every second year (the boat in the ocean 5 month a year).
