Cable crimper

What crimper do people recommend?
I need to make some cables from 8 - 2/0, and I am wondering which one people like most and why.
I see many people like the TEMco brand on Amazon.
Do people prefer indent or compression crimps?
Are hydraulic or hammer or lever crimpers preferred?

Thanks for your help!

8 AWG wire is unusual and this crimper does not do 8. Suggest you use 6 in place of 8. Also FTZ brand lugs They have these at the SBO store too.

Also checked out MainSail's pbase article on the FTZ crimper versus "other" brands.

Well done!

Agree with Kerry, I purchased the hydraulic crimper from harbor freight when I was installing my windlass. Worked great for crimping 1-0 cable. Not saying that this would be my first choice if I was a professional; however, it worked great for my limited application. Checked all crimps thoroughly and they were secure. Think that I paid approximately $50 for the crimper.

I read the article. It was good. I also watched the HFT video on using the hydraulic crimper. Interestingly, the crimp he showed at the end was over-crimped! I just did not know until I read your article.
I also watched a Youtube video on the TEMco hydraulic crimper. It had interestingly sized dies too. A "70" die was supposed to crimp a 2/0 lug and cable. The die that was labeled for the lug and wire the person tried DID NOT WORK! He had to size down to make it work. I did not buy that crimper...
I bought the FTZ. It is more expensive, but I know it is a quality tool, and it supports SBO.

Yeah I bought a Temco and it is nothing more than a blue painted version of the dime a dozen yellow Chinese cheapo. Lots of claims by them and all bogus. They marketed the tool as AWG but it's NOT....

When I spoke with them on the phone, pretty damn disgusted, they fully admitted the tool does not have AWG dies nor do they plan to offer it with AWG dies. When I told them (IIRC his name was Starling) that the tool was absolutely identical to a yellow tool I paid $34.00 for he admitted they just source the tool and specify color. When I asked why an American company, selling tools in the US where AWG is the standard, would specify color but not the proper crimp dies he was pretty silent and just stated that I was really paying for the 5 year warranty and that they would gladly refund my money...

I took the refund and shipped the overpriced POS back. Oh and they also fully admitted that there is no die that even comes close to working for 1/0. For 2/0 it over crimped and the next size die up was way under crimped. It is really sad when US companies choose a paint color, sticker & profit, over performance, especially when dealing with electricity...

Yeah. The results for the TEMco on the Youtube video sure looked similar to yours! So glad I avoided their hype: US made tools... Quality costs, so when someone presents something to do a serious job for pennies, I figure I better look around and compare. I will be happy to receive the new FTZ and crimp some cables!

Thanks,
Andrew

Maine,
Geez, I read your article on crimpers, especially the Harbor Freight hydraulic unit that I used to crimp all of the 1-0 cables for my windlass. Wish that I had read this before; now I won't be able to sleep at nite! Guess I will have to add another project to the list--- re crimp all the lugs for the windlass.

You know you can just lay a screw driver blade on its side over the crimp and smack it with a hammer. It will put a nice indentation in the crimp that will work quite well, if done carefully. Sure a tool is nice, but if you don't have the tool, there are ways to accomplish crimping.
