I am redoing some of the cabin teak and need to replace some of the wood screws. They look to be made of bronze or marine brass. Does anyone know what they are made of and where I can get various sizes?

Look to Me Like Brass?

Dear Alumrock: You don't mention your boat model or age and that's not referenced in your profile either. But your screw picture looks very similar to the screws used in the interior of my 1980 era boat (Hunter Cherubini 36). Mine are brass screws. I would agree with Seadaddler about stainless. I tend to replace with stainless, even in the interior. Brass oxidizes, turns a brown brown and can leach color into the teak in areas that might get wet. My suggestion: Replace with stainless. If you don't like the look of stainless silver contrasting next to the teak, just dab a bit of brownish paint or stain with an artist's paint brush on the screw head. If the screw heads have been recessed into the wood and covered with wood bungs and your are planning to bung again, then also consider to replace with stainless. As to where to buy brass screws .... any hardware store. As to stainless, being interior, I don't think that marine grade stainless will be all that important. Most Ace hardware stores (in my area anyway) have a reasonable selection of stainless bolts/screws. West Marine has an extensive selection. To change the subject. I was employee of a mining company for 30 years. Your "alumrock" screen name intrigues me. Care to explain the background? regards, rardi (My explanation for the "rardi" screen name: It's a concatenation of my first name's inital and then several letters of my last name.)

Wherr does Alumrock Come from?

Alumrock is the name of a park near where I live. It was named after a large rock that was thought to be alum at the time.

84' Hunter 31

By the way The screws are from a 1984 Hunter 31, I think I will change to S.S. as advised.

Alum Rock

Thanks: Living in Redwood City during my youth, I should have put 2+2 together about Alum Rock. But I never did visit the park (since there were many closer good natural parks in San Mateo County ) and I hadn't heard the name Alum Rock mentioned in many years ... regards, rardi

I have an '88 Legend 37...

...and the screws use to hold the teak/holly floor boards (1-1/2" wood screws holding 6" strips of t/h) in place in the aft cabin are made of bronze. I am currently replacing them with 1" ss screws and collars (6 of them). The bare neck (without threads) serve little purpose in this case so #12x1" SS wood screws will do the same thing.

they are bronze

and the heads strip real easily because they are so soft. They also tarnish to a greenish color. I would switch to SS.
