recently acquired a 1977, 30ft Hunter and I intend to lead main halyard aft. Need info on winch size.

Why? Attempting to lead all lines back to cockpit. If so you won’t need a huge winch for the main halyard. I’m thinking a turning block or two and a cam or clutch cleat. Come on man it’s only a 30. We hoist ours by hand to the top and cleat off on mast. Just need a helms person to point windward. Keeps the lines out of the cockpit.

For comparison, my C30 has 16s on the cabin top. We can get the sail up by hand but need the winch to tension it.

The comment prompted me to go find a photo of my 1981 Cherubini Hunter 27 tall rig and it shows a Lewmar 6 by the main sail and jib halyards. If you don't get an answer to your original question about what was original equipment on a Hunter 30, possibly a google image search might turn something up.
I can raise my sails by themselves, but as I've learned from forum members such as @Ward H, you use the winch to tension the sail.

Thanks for the input. I presently sail a Hunter 36. The Hunter 30 is my new project boat. The Lewmar 6 sounds good.
My 27ft Catalina didn't have cabin winches. Halyards were run back to the cockpit winches for tensioning then cleated off on the cabin top.

I have a self tailing Lewmar 16 on my Catalina 30. Seems to be the stock winch for that purpose. By the way, I can hoist my main at the mast but the increased friction of running the halyard back increases the effort to raise the sail and I sure do like the winch. I like not having to go up to the mast to raise the sail as I single hand a lot and I am as old as dirt.

Something sticks in my head that the cabin-top winch is a size 6 and the jib winches are 7's, for what that's worth.
I also have mounting pads with aluminum plates in them for turning blocks, in case you need to add those. Depending on what future upgrades you might be considering, you might want to use the ones for 4 lines instead of just 2 for the halyards you have now, I have to replace mine if I make any upgrades beyond what I have. (I also need a winning lottery ticket do that. ;-)

I have maxwell 17s on my H31 cabin top led aft for halyards.. as others stated can raise main without but is needed for tensioning the last few bits. Check Boaters Resale Shop in Kemah Tx for second hand winches.

Cabin top main halyard winch on my '77 h30 is a Lewmar 8. I believe it came standard. Only a one speed but really doesn't matter as it is only used to raise the sail and tighten the luff.
