I plan to install a solar ventilation fan on my cabin top when the weather breaks. I was wandering if there are any suprises to be found when drilling the 3" hole? Hopefully I will miss the sliding companionway door. Is the top made from two layers of fiberglass with a liner in between?

Older 27

If it is an older 27 (one of the Cherubinis), it's deck is probably cored, and I suppose there is a fiberglass liner. So, you will have to go through the exterior skin, the wood core, the inner skin, and then the liner. Probably no other surprises. Shouldn't be too hard, but remember to seal the exposed core with epoxy, or it can absorb water. That would touch off a whole host of problems, but is very easily avoided.

Solar Vent Fan

I did this job last year and put the fan above the head. I didn't have a hole saw big enough so used a saber saw after taping with blue masking tape and marking. The deck of my H27-Windsong was cored with endgrain balsa and below that was the cabin liner. The only supprise was the diameter of the hole diminished at the bottom probably due to my poor set of the saw. Some grinding solved that and the installation was straight forward
