WELL IT HAD TO HAPPEN *CRY .... LAST WEEKEND WHILE OUT SAILING I WENT BELOW TO USE THE HEAD AND GET SOME COLD BEVERAGE THE BOAT LEARCHED AND I FELL AGAINST THE TABLE IN THE CABIN AND IT SPLIT IN HALF. I HAVE OFTEN CONSIDERED REMOVING IT ANYWAY AFTER READING GENE'S WRITE UP ABOUT RAINBOW CHASER, BUT WAS WAITING UNTIL I REMOVED THE MAST TO DO IT. WELL IT'S IN MY GARAGE NOW SO I AM LOOKING FOR ANY IDEAS ABOUT ANYONE WHO HAS DONE A MODIFICATION TO THE TABLE ARRANGEMENT. GENE I HAVE FOLLOWED YOUR PAGE FOR YEARS NOW (EVEN BEFORE I PURCHACED HARRIET'S CHARIOT) BUT DON'T QUITE UNDERSTAND HOW THE TABLE IS HUNG ON THE WALL... IT APPEARS THAT YOU HAVE TO MUSCLE IT OFF THE WALL AND HANG IT ON SOME WALL BRACKETS AND THEN SUPPORT IT WITH A LEG. I AM CONSIDERING BUILDING A BOX OFF THE BULKHEAD AND HINGING IT OFF THE BOX... I WOULD MAKE THE BOX A STORAGE CABNET FOR INTOXICATING LIQUIDS AND GLASSWARE FOR SAME. I DID THIS IN A CATALINA 30 I HAD THAT HAD A TABLE THAT NEEDED 2 MEN AND A BOY TO SET UP. I AM ALSO CONSIDERING REPLACING THE FLOORING IN THE MAIN CABIN DUE TO THE FACT THAT HURRICANE CHARLIE MANAGED TO PUT ENOUGH WATER INSIDE THE BOAT ON THE CABIN SOLE AS TO CAUSE MOST OF THE THIN LAMINATE TO DELAMINATE... I AM CONSIDERING RIPPING IT OUR AND USING SOME TONG AND GROOVE SOLID HARDWOOD AND GLUING IT TO THE FIBERGLASS CABIN SOLE USING 5200... ANYWAY AS OF NOW MY (MY WIFES ) MAIN CONCERN IS TO REPLACE THE TABLE..... ANY IDEAS OR PICTURES OF WHAT YOU DID??? THANKS

Cabin (saloon) table

Chet.......... I have the all-time bestest goodest of all answers to your problem!!!! I actually CUT the table out from around my mast because I was so tired of walking around it all the time. Not to mention the fact that other than the fact that it did hold some comestibles rather nicely, it just took up a lot of room. First, I sold the table for $400. I then made (out of mostly junk and other readily-available materials) a table that is larger than the original, but also has some rather attractive qualities: - it swings out of your way when you need to get past it. (two crew can easily pass each other....even bulky ones like me!) - Two people can eat at it comfortably on the starboard settee, or four can sit opposite equally as comfortably and eat or drink with NO dropleaves. - Two (or four) can play cards just the same. - The whole thing slides and locks up flush with the overhead while underway, and in the process affords a convenient handhold on the aft of the mast for safe passage forward in rough seas. The plans for this are available for a modest fee.......nah! If anyone is interested, I'll take some pictures and post them for you. By the way, not including my time, the new table cost less than half of what I got for the old one at a swap meet....well, there's a lot of teak in that table, and when you figure it by the pound........? my method

Chet, it's not that much trouble. It just all folds out or back in. Here is an ascii drawing. I won't be back to my boat for about 6 weeks or so, but I can take some measurements then. It was all built from the old table. Well, the drawing comes out distorted when posted. Email me if you'd like me to send it to you. austinsailor at cs dot com Gene Gruender Folded ( o= piano hinge) spacer from bulkhead ^ | | | | | | |o| | | | | | | |o| | | | | | |<table top | | | | | | | | | | |o| | ^_____ | | ^ | bulkhead | | Leg Open | | | | | _________________ |o_______o o| | | | | | | | | | | |

I removed the table this past week. I have been thinking of removeing it for two years and finally did it. It is like a new boat with so much room I don't know what to do with it. I purchased a fold up table from one of the mail order companies to use when we eat inside. I think we have only eaten inside once in the past two years.

table

Chet: I took mine out after stubbing my toe and being smashed into it in the Gulf of Mexico. The Admiral had long complained that you couldn't dance with the damn thing taking up all that room. A recently visiting surveyor explained that if you ever want to sell the boat, put the table back in. It's now in my living room. I finally got a shop, so the nifty bulkhead table is high on the list of things to do. Gene and Dave: post some pictures ! RS

I gained a bunch of storage

My 37C already had the table removed when I bought it. I always thought there was too much space wasted in the cabin. I completely cut out the starboard settee/berth and made a raised platform that comes clear out to the bilge opening. There is enough room under the platform for an 80-gallon water tank plus the pump, a large pressure tank, and still room left over for a water maker. Then I put a dinette booth type table with benches on top of the platform. I copied the design from an older Cal 36. I’m still in process of building the table but I already have a bunch more storage under the bench seats. The mast is kind of in the way of getting in and out of the forward side of the dinette so I’m getting kind of creative with the table. I’ve take pictures throughout the project so I can post them when I get it done.

Sorry, but things have been hectic here...

My wife had to be airlifted to the mainland this past weekend because she took a nasty fall. She broke her neck about 18 months ago, and was in a "halo" for six months, then a stiff collar for another six. When he released her, the Dr. said, "Don't forget to be very careful, your C-1 & C-2 vertebrae only healed with scar tissue, not bone. If you take a fall, you could be dead in 4 minutes". Well, she fell, but did not die. This makes me very happy. She's still under observation, but all seems well. I'll take some pix this weekend of the table. It really is the bestest most wonderfullest! Dave!
