I'm about to remove the weathered cabin tape stripes on my 28.5. Hunter doesn't sell the replacement stripes anymore. Looking for suggestions on how to cut and re-apply stripes using something like 2 inch tape. Want to do a professional looking job but I'm not a pro-- Who's done this? How did you do it? I've purchased the "eraser" wheel so doubt there will be any problem in removing the old stripes.

Replacing Stripe Tape

I replaced the bootstripe on my old Clipper 26 with a 2" tape I bought from a plastics store. They actually exist. You need to find a company that manufactures lettering for applying above doors in schools, businesses, etc. The tape comes in long rolls on a quick-release-type material so you can peel it off. Mark where it is to go in pencil, spray the area with a soapy water mixture, press the tape on (you can move it around on the soapy surface). Then, using a rubber roller (like for wallpaper) roll out the bubbles. Voila!

Just like vinyl letters

Apply it the same way as vinyl lettering (boat names, etc.). Make sure you measure, mark, press & roll. I used a plastic squee-gee, like that used to apply wall putty (filler), to press out the air bubbles.

How a professional would do it

I am in the business. The first thing to do is visit a sign supply store, not a sign store. Sign supply stores supply sign stores with the vinyl and other application materials. Quite often, these sign supply stores will cut rolls to the width you want from the color of your choice. Make sure to ask for the 2 mil vinyl. They also sell a product called rapid-tac. This fluid is better than the soapy water other people have suggested. After that, its all application. Spray on the rapid-tac on the boat. Lay on the vinyl pulling the back liner off as you go and keep it wet under the adhesive with the rapid-tac. After its all on, squeegee out the water bubbles and then just wait until it all dries. Your hard work will bring you lots of compliments as it did for me.
