On my 87 H23, the setp inside the cabin merely sits over the top of a small bracket on each side. It appears that it is designed to just sit there so that it can be easily removed to get to the cooler which is stored behind it. (lift out the step, slide the cooler forward). The problem that I have with this is that the step does not fit very tightly so will wobble back and forth if not stepped upon squarely in the middle. In fact, last week, my older son (teenager - big feet) stepped on it too much on the fron side of the step sending him flying with the step lifting off and smashing one of the slats where you insert the bottom floor pieces when making the "large bed". I don't want to fasten the step down permanently since then I couldn't open the cooler. Does anyone have a solution on how they keep their step where it's supposed to be and still allow it to be removed easily? Thanks.

To Joel of Gloucester: Replace the molding that keeps the step in place. I advise against changing the design for two reasons: 1. as you noted, it keeps the cooler from pitching forward and after; but 2. more importantly, it keeps locks the sliding gailey in either the fully forward or fully aft position (at least on my model, an early 1985). I had to replace one or both of the pieces of wood that the step sets on , when I did , I simply made it a real tight fit, Have not had a probem, it is not however something to jump on or off of,I do put some weight on it going in and out with a cooler full of ice, like the previous post mentioned maybe a latch , I think the best thing is to jusst use some care, we have had our boat 6 years and never a problem, good luck Mike

I agree with Mike B. Just replace the brackets or glue some veneer on them to make the step fit more snug. Mine were replaced and are quite tight..............no problem.

Simple fix
From the front of the step, drill a small hole (1/8 inch should be OK) through the step and into the fixed bracket. Then stick a cotter pin all the way in. The pin will keep the step from lifting or sliding off to the side, and the step will not move. Unless the step brackets are REALLY worn, you should only have to do this on one side. Good luck. Drill a small hole 1/8 and put a cotter pin in this should be done on the starboard side of the step. I had this on my Hunter 23 and never had a problem. When you want the galley out pull the pin and lift up the step.The hole should be horizontal about the middle of the side rail supporting the step and go all the way through the lip on the seat. Then lift the cushion and slide a cotter pin in. Done
